Katy Salinas (2010)

 

A "living" was created through a peculiar character who in less than a week awoke doubts, fears, laughs, compassion, hates, love, sadness, anger and shock.

“Katy Salinas”, a character that represents the beauty obsession taken to the limit, has set out many questions about the value that the current society gives to appearance and how all the messages that people receive constantly through the mass media can influence to make them want to maintain themselves forever young (especially women). This was done through the creation of a blog that has generated more than 20,000 visits  in a week and more than 1,000 comments (these have been written down in the blog, in her mail and in a wide range of forum discussions). This character recreates the situation of a woman who has spent her entire life following all kind of advice and récipes. She has carried out the most horrific actions that she finds in the media in order to become a beauty and keep being younger at any price, even forgetting how to live.
The Work represents, on the one hand, an extreme case of unhappiness (generating a spectator repulsion) and ,on the other hand, it’s an “ode to life” because there are plenty of messages that tell her to go out, smile, love, enjoy and live…
